OpenAI's new Data agent needs your business data in one place already — most Northwestern Ontario businesses aren't there yet
On September 10, OpenAI added a Data agent to ChatGPT Work that turns a company's own numbers into dashboards and analysis in plain English — but only for a business whose data already lives in a connected warehouse or BI tool. For most Northwestern Ontario operations, that isn't true yet, and closing that gap is the actual project.
OpenAI's new Data agent, added to ChatGPT Work on September 10, 2026, lets an employee ask a plain-language question and get back a dashboard built from the company's own sales, spending, or account data — no query language, no analyst required. It is a genuinely useful capability, and it is also an early look at a divide that is going to matter more every year: it only works for a business whose data already lives in a connected system, and most Northwestern Ontario operations do not have that yet. The AI is not the bottleneck here. Where the data lives is.
What OpenAI actually shipped
The Data agent is a plugin inside ChatGPT Work — a business-oriented agent mode OpenAI has been rolling out through 2026. A user adds the Data Plugin, types "@data" in a prompt, and connects it to the data sources the company already uses: approved connections include Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, MongoDB, and ClickHouse, plus business-intelligence tools including Power BI, Tableau, Omni, Oracle BI, Sigma, and ThoughtSpot, and it can pull supporting documents from Google Drive and SharePoint. Ask it something like why sales slowed last quarter or which accounts are at risk, and it investigates the connected data and returns an interactive dashboard the user can share and keep refining in conversation — instead of waiting on a report or a colleague who knows the query language.
Who actually gets it
The Data agent is not available on ChatGPT's consumer plans. It ships on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise only — not Free, Go, Plus, or Pro. Business is priced at $25 per user per month billed monthly, or $20 per user per month billed annually, with a two-seat minimum, according to OpenAI's own help centre. That minimum matters here: a true one-person operation cannot simply add a single Business seat to get this feature. It is built for a team of at least two, already paying for one of the top two subscription tiers, with company data already centralized enough to plug in.
The actual gap for Northwestern Ontario
None of the systems the Data agent connects to are what a typical Northwestern Ontario business under 50 employees runs day to day. Most operations in this region work out of point-of-sale software, QuickBooks or Sage, a booking or scheduling tool, and a folder of spreadsheets and email attachments — not a data warehouse or an enterprise BI platform. Until that changes, the Data agent has nothing to connect to, no matter how many Business seats a company buys. That is the real story in this launch for the region: a major AI vendor has now shipped a flagship product on the assumption that a business's operational data already lives in one queryable place. The businesses that do not have that yet will keep watching each new 'just ask it' AI headline apply to somebody else's company — not because the AI is out of reach, but because there is nothing under it to ask.
This is not a case for signing up for ChatGPT Business today. A Business seat pointed at nothing but scattered spreadsheets and PDF exports will not produce the kind of dashboard OpenAI demonstrated — the value sits in the data plumbing behind it, not the subscription itself. Paying for the seat before the data is centralized buys a login, not the capability.
A practical first step
Before spending on an AI seat built for this, the more useful week's work is an internal data audit: list every place your operational numbers currently live — POS exports, invoicing software, a booking calendar, a shared drive of spreadsheets — then pick the single highest-value one, whether that's sales, bookings, or inventory, and consolidate it into one clean, structured system. That does not have to mean a data warehouse; an entry-level accounting platform or a properly structured, single source-of-truth spreadsheet clears the same bar for a small operation. That consolidation is the groundwork every future version of this kind of tool — from OpenAI or anyone else — is going to require. The Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre's Building Blueprints for AI Adoption advisory program exists specifically to help a local business scope that kind of before-the-AI project, and a local implementation partner can help with the consolidation work itself once a target system is chosen.

Frequently asked
What is the OpenAI Data agent in ChatGPT Work?
It is a plugin, launched September 10, 2026, that connects to a company's existing data warehouse, database, or business-intelligence tool and lets an employee ask plain-language questions about that data, returning an interactive dashboard instead of requiring a query language or a data analyst. It is available only on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise plans.
Can a small Northwestern Ontario business use it today?
Only if the business already stores its operational data in one of the connected systems — a data warehouse such as Snowflake or BigQuery, or a BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau — and already pays for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise. Most small NWO operations run on point-of-sale software, accounting software, and spreadsheets instead, so the more useful first move is consolidating that data into one clean system before paying for the AI seat.
What does ChatGPT Business cost?
According to OpenAI's help centre, ChatGPT Business is $25 per user per month billed monthly, or $20 per user per month billed annually, with a two-seat minimum. Confirm current pricing directly with OpenAI, as subscription pricing changes.
