Ontario sets ground rules for AI data centre investment

On August 13, the Ford government released a Data Centre Playbook — a proposed framework for evaluating and approving large AI data centre developments across Ontario, with a 30-day public comment period now open on the Environmental Registry of Ontario and the Ontario Regulatory Registry. The framework screens large projects through three criteria: economic development potential, data security, and local community benefit. Facilities consuming more than one megawatt of electricity will pay a higher industrial electricity rate than standard users, and the province expects them to build their own power generation or use closed-loop water systems with minimal water consumption. Ontario projects that its broader AI Industrial Strategy could contribute $122 billion in economic growth by 2035 and create more than 17,000 jobs per year. For NWO: Northwestern Ontario's hydroelectric generating capacity makes it a credible location for power-intensive AI infrastructure, and the framework's 30-day comment period gives northern communities and businesses a formal channel to shape the final Playbook. FedNor invests $1.1M in Indigenous clean energy on Lake Nipigon

On August 5, FedNor announced a total investment of $1,129,183 — including $669,383 in new funding — to Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek, a First Nations community on the southeast shores of Lake Nipigon in Northwestern Ontario. Delivered through the Northern Ontario Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative, the funding supports a district biomass heating system that will use wood residue from a local sawmill as renewable fuel to heat community buildings and reduce reliance on diesel generators. Patty Hajdu, Minister responsible for FedNor and MP for Thunder Bay — Superior North, made the announcement. The project demonstrates a practical pattern for remote NWO communities: using a material already produced locally to displace a fuel that must be trucked in, reducing both operating costs and emissions.

Anthropic reports first quarterly profit; Sonnet 5 pricing permanently set

CNBC reported August 15 that Anthropic's preliminary Q2 2026 revenue exceeded US$11.5 billion, up from US$4.73 billion in Q1 2026 and US$787 million in Q2 2025, with a projected first-ever quarterly operating profit of US$559 million. These figures are from reported investor materials, not an official Anthropic announcement; Anthropic has stated that Q3 and Q4 profitability is not guaranteed. Separately, on August 10, Anthropic confirmed that Claude Sonnet 5 pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens is now permanent: a previously scheduled September 1 increase to $3 and $15 per million tokens will not take effect. Sonnet 5, released June 30, is the default model on Claude Free and Pro tiers and is available on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry with no Canada-specific access restrictions. For NWO operators: the pricing hold removes a cost increase that had been six weeks away, and the revenue trajectory indicates the company is not under financial pressure that would prompt near-term access or pricing changes.

NWO wildfire evacuees fall below 900 as fire season shows sustained improvement

As of August 15, approximately 829 people remained displaced due to wildfires in Ontario — down from more than 1,876 at the start of August and more than 2,800 at the season's peak in late July. Active fire counts in Northwestern Ontario had fallen to 87, with the forest fire hazard rated mostly low to moderate across the region, though areas of high hazard remain in the southwestern part of the Northwest. About 2,000 evacuees from NWO communities have returned home since the season peaked. New wildfire activity emerged in Northeastern Ontario on August 16, with eight new fires confirmed. FedNor funds AI cybersecurity platform in Northern Ontario

On July 31, FedNor announced $1,200,909 in repayable funding to SKADI Cyber Defense Corporation in North Bay to develop and commercialize its Frostbow AI platform — a system that uses cognitive AI combining ontology, causal reasoning, and predictive models to detect, assess, and respond to network threats with minimal human oversight. The announcement is part of a $2.7 million total investment under FedNor's Regional Defence Investment Initiative that also includes $1.5 million to the International Test Pilots School to relocate its tactical training centre to North Bay's Jack Garland Airport. Both projects are in Northeastern Ontario; the RDII program is available to defence and AI technology companies across all of Northern Ontario, including the Northwest. The combined investment is expected to support approximately 60 full-time jobs in the region.
